“Above all, have fervent and unfailing love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins [it overlooks unkindness and unselfishly seeks the best for others.] 1 Peter 4:8 AMP
If you’re anything like me, growing up, you probably had your share of embarrassing moments that you wished you could forget or mistakes that could have turned out terribly.
By God’s grace, that embarrassment didn’t last forever and the consequences of that mistake that should have taken you out passed over you. Some may call it lucky, but in all honesty it was because of God’s love that things didn’t turn out the way that they probably should have.
In 1 Peter 4:8, the author tells us that it is important to love one another because love covers a multitude of sins. Admittedly, it took me a while to begin the understand the depth of this scripture, but the author is saying is that love can get you out of a lot of tricky situations.

For example, God’s love redeemed us from our sinful nature through Jesus’ sacrifice of His life on the cross. Jesus could have easily stayed in heaven and watched us in our sin, however because of God’s love, He gave His life, unselfishly, to redeem us back to him. The love that covers a multitude of sins is synonymous with the blood of Jesus.
Similarly, when we interact with one another, we should also show the same level of love and unselfishness towards one another. Everything we do should be done in love (1 Corinthians 16:14).
Unfortunately, many of us read this scripture and think that it means to remove all boundaries in our lives and to continually help and forgive one another. While we are instructed to forgive (Ephesians 4:31-32), we do not have to continue in fellowship with people that continually wrong us. Instead, we forgive that person and pray for that person in the areas that they have wronged us. In doing this, we are covering them in love through prayer and covering ourselves through the establishment and implementation of our boundaries.
