Understanding the Assignment

I understood the assignment!

This phrase popularized by rapper Tay Money has been all over the internet, on social media and various videos as people tout their success over one or more obstacles.

In the Christian experience, it is not only important that we understand the assignment that God gives us, but that we also prepare ourselves for the assignment. For example, as a student, you may understand that there is a test coming on a certain day, but if you do not prepare yourself for the test by studying, you may not be successful in passing the test.

1 Peter 3: 15-16 NIV reads:

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

As we read, we begin to understand that the Lord wants us to be prepared! He wants us to be able to speak to Him as being the reason for our hope, but not only prepared to respond, but responding with grace. As we do this, we also are cautioned to remember that everyone may not accept our response but by operating in His principles, we will shame those who speak against us.

A familiar adage says: “tell the truth, shame the devil!” this scripture gives credence to that statement. When we are prepared with a gracious answer and to speak truth, even when it hurts we shame the demonic spirit that may speak against us and expose it for what it is.

Today I encourage you to be prepared – have a word in season and out of season (Timothy 2:4), but realize and know that everyone will not receive the words you speak and speak anyway! You words have power and your voice is needed to continue the advancement of the kingdom.

Don’t just look like a kingdom citizen, act like one! Walk and talk in the authority that God has given you prepared to share His word with others no matter where you go!
